    Coronado Municipal Golf Course

Details: The Golf Course outside lighting is more than 20 years old and at the end of its useful life. This project was approved in late January and includes replacing the existing lighting with unobtrusive LED lighting that will improve illumination and energy efficiency. Measures have been taken to reduce light trespass on the surrounding neighborhood while improving the safety and security of the area. Twenty-two bollards have been removed and 36 hardwired, 24 solar-powered light bollards and eight new wall sconces are to be installed.

Timeline: Construction began March 3 and the project was completed the second week of May.

Considerations: There were 3 phases to this project to minimize parking impacts to the Golf Course and Feast and Fareway.

    Status: Completed

    Coronado Tennis Courts

Description: Lighting at three sets of City of Coronado tennis courts were no longer providing sufficient lighting, and were outdated and unreliableLibrary Courts, 640 Orange Ave., Tennis Center, 1501 Glorietta Blvd., and Robbin Adair Tennis Complex, 650 D Avenue.  A total of 162 shoebox light fixtures on 42 poles were upgraded with LED lights to improve security, illumination, and energy efficiency. The new lights now conform to International Tennis Federation Class II standard of play. Court lighting are controlled by one-hour manually controlled timers. In addition, poles and hardware were painted and repaired during the scheduled lighting installation.

Timeline: All work was substantially complete on Dec 17, 2021.  Minor punchlist items were outstanding.  Painting was not possible due to the rainy weather.  All courts are now 100% complete as follows:

    Jan 10 Library Courts

    Jan 10 Coronado Tennis Center

    Jan 18 Robbin Adair Courts

    Coronado Aquatics Center

Description: The City of Coronado Aquatics Center lighting, which illuminates the pool for aquatic activities during hours of darkness, was more than 15 years old and all 56 inefficient 1000-watt light “bulbs” were near the end of their useful life. In addition, the light pole brackets were corroded and required replacement. The project replaced the corroded light pole support brackets and the existing inefficient metal halide light fixtures with upgraded LED lights to improve illumination and energy efficiency. Two lighting standards were used in specifying the equipment: the Illuminating Engineering Society-recommended targets for high-activity pool decks and NCAA-recommended illuminance levels for intercollegiate play for swimming pools. Since the existing poles were in good condition, they were preserved to avoid unnecessary replacement costs. Neighborhood light trespass was a key consideration in the design so light shields, a timer control system, and photocells were used to mitigate negative impacts while still providing enough lighting for safety.

Timeline: Work was done Nov. 1-14 to coincide with annual pool maintenance.

    Status: Complete.
